Escape to a vintage picnic by the sea

Updated: Jun 17, 2024

It's time to relax and immerse yourself in the simple pleasure of a beach picnic.

Easy for me to say, right? I'm fortunate to live near the wild and craggy coast of Maine and within walking distance to our town beach. Both tranquil spots. But to be completely honest, my idea of a picnic was throwing a few sandwiches in our fraying insulated bag, some goldfish and a juice box for my daughter, and potentially some luke warm seltzers, which on a good day I might have thrown in the fridge.

When I found this vintage, suitcase style basket, it really spoke to me. Its brown wicker lid and bright pink straps unveiled a pretty floral lining with real plates and silverware, and a few plastic wine glasses. I found the salt and pepper shakers charming. It was something I would typically never include in a picnic, but I loved the idea of taking time to savor a relaxing meal. The experience of planning our sea picnic forced me to slow down and seek simple pleasure and joy. A true disconnect from the hustle of modern life.

I found this picnic basket on Amazon. Click below to view the basket and accessories.

Here are a few tips, so you too can savor the vintage picnic experience:

Keep it Simple

It doesn't have to be fancy to be beautiful. I knew we'd have about an hour or two overlooking the ocean, and since we're not morning people, I planned an afternoon snack, with strawberries, grapes, brie and croissants, all from our local Market Basket, a New England grocery store with affordable prices. I paired it with a simple Rosé for my husband and I.

Step into Another Century

I imagined I was stepping into a Frank Weston Benson painting of the 1900s, enjoying the magnificent beauty of the coast or into The Light Between Oceans, where an isolated lighthouse keeper finds romance among the solace of the sea. Whether its the early 20th century, or a World War II era picnic (mostly unrationed veggies from your garden), immerse yourself in the joy of a quieter time...

Take Time for Yourself

You don't need to live near a craggy coastline or even water to relish a picnic. Find a small grassy spot and enjoy the moment. Time travel to another decade or simply take delight in a break from daily life. You deserve it.
